Appearance → Customize → Header → Display the social links turns the row on and off. What it shows comes from a menu.
Setting it up
- Appearance → Menus → create a menu — call it Social.
- Add Custom Links: the URL of each profile, and any label you like. The label is never printed; it becomes the icon’s screen-reader text.
- Under Menu Settings, tick Social Menu.
The row appears in the header bar and, below the tablet width, in the mobile drawer. With no menu assigned to that location nothing is printed at all, whatever the switch says.
The icon is chosen from the URL
You do not pick icons. Stoat reads each link’s host and uses the matching brand mark, so https://bsky.app/profile/you gets the Bluesky butterfly and https://you.substack.com gets the Substack mark.

Two links are not sites:
- A
mailto:link gets an envelope. - Any URL containing
feed(/feed/) gets the RSS mark.
A URL no brand claims keeps its visible text label instead of an icon, so an obscure network still renders — as the words you typed. If that is not what you want, either drop the link or add the mark yourself with the stoat_social_icons filter (see hooks and filters).
One switch, two places
Display the social links covers the header bar and its copy in the mobile drawer. That is on purpose: below the tablet width the drawer’s copy is the bar’s row, so leaving icons in the menu after switching them off in the header would read as a bug.
Ordering and how many
The row is printed in menu order, so drag the items in Appearance → Menus to reorder. Four or five is about the limit before the row starts competing with the button for the right-hand end of the bar; on Logo center and Nav below the icons move to the left of the logo, which gives you a little more room.
If you want the whole list, put it in a footer widget instead and keep two or three in the header.
