Pages have their own setting, separate from posts and from the blog listing. A wide page alongside narrow posts is the common pairing, and it is why the two are not one setting.
Overriding it on one page
In the page editor, the Page options box in the settings sidebar carries a Layout radio group:
- — Site default — (selected) follows the Customizer setting above
- Narrow / Full width / Sidebar right / Sidebar left
This is where the setting really earns its place. Most pages — About, Contact, Privacy — are prose and want the narrow column. One or two are a landing page or a gallery and want the full width. Set the site default to narrow, override the exceptions.
Set it back to Site default and the page follows the site again, including when you later change that default.
The editor canvas follows it
Pick Full width and the block editor canvas widens immediately, so you build at the width the page will actually render at.
The magazine-homepage case
There is one combination worth knowing about. A page that is
- set to Full width, and
- has its title hidden (Page options → Hide page title?)
gets its top padding dropped to a thin step, so the first block starts directly under the header. That is what you want for a landing page built entirely out of blocks, where a gap and a missing title would read as a mistake.
The Archives template
A page using the Archives template takes its layout from exactly the same place — the site default, overridden by the Page options box.
If the sidebar is empty
A sidebar layout with nothing in the widget area falls back to the narrow column. See Enable the sidebar.
