When no image logo is set, the site name is your masthead. Rural Blog gives it a type treatment of its own, because a masthead is the one heading that usually should differ from the headings under it: bold and widely tracked on a magazine, plain lowercase on a journal.
All of it is at Appearance → Customize → Site Identity, and all of it only applies while no logo image is uploaded. With an image logo, use Image logo height instead.
Text logo typography

The face is not offered. The site name follows your heading font — a masthead in a third family is a different site, not a different setting.
Two of these have a fallback worth reading carefully:
- Weight left on Same as heading tracks whatever your heading weight is. Set a number and the masthead is pinned there while your headings move freely.
- Case left on Default — UPPERCASE is uppercase; that is the theme’s own masthead treatment, not an inherit from your headings. Pick None — as typed to print the site name exactly as you wrote it in Settings → General.
Letter spacing on phones
The theme drops the masthead’s tracking to zero on small screens, where a tracked uppercase name eats the whole bar. Filling in the letter spacing box holds your value at every width, phones included. If you want tracking on desktop and none on mobile, leave the box empty.
Text logo colour
Site Identity → Text logo color.
Empty is not black — it is inherit, so the site name follows the header text colour. A dark header skin therefore gets a light masthead without you picking anything, which is why the default is empty and should usually stay that way.
Set a colour here when the masthead is a brand colour that should hold whatever the header does around it.
The tagline has its own picker rather than sharing this one, so you can mute one against the other.
A worked example
A quiet, lowercase, journal-style masthead:
